According to a report by a Republican People's Party deputy, 641 prisoners in Turkish prisons have committed suicide in the past 25 years.
According to the Turkish Mint website, Republican People's Party lawmaker Gliz Bicherkaraja stressed that according to the Ministry of Justice and the Council of Europe, prisoners do not need psychological assistance and prison staff lack basic training in dealing with mental disorders.
The report claims that access to health care is worrying and that the situation is getting worse by the day. Overcrowding in prisons is one of the main problems that also leads to poor personal hygiene.
According to the report, Turkey had the highest incarceration rate in 2020 among the 47 member states of the Council of Europe, with 357 prisoners per 100,000. There are also 1,605 sick prisoners in Turkish prisons, of which 604 are in critical condition.
The report also states that 125 people have died in Turkish prisons since 2014. Mass arrests and detentions have taken place since the July 2016 coup in Turkey. The ruling Justice and Development Party accuses the Gulen organization of plotting a failed coup, although this claim has been firmly denied by the Gulen organization.
Critics accuse Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who launched a massive crackdown on dissent after the coup, of using the incident as an excuse to crack down on dissent.
