Tehran, YJC. Nutrition expert explains ways to fight constipation.

Nutrition expert Maryam Shirdasti in interview with ISNA in Kermanshah said that constipation is a result of slow bowels movements or some diseases and is likely to leave bad effects on a whole range of bodily systems and functions.

The constipated have to increase their fiber intake. To do that, they must increase their fruit and vegetable consumption, she said.

Shirdasti explained "Vegetables have to be used raw and between the meals or boiled and as a meal.”

Vegetables like carrot, lettuce, cabbage, and tomato have more powerful effects; and fruits such as figs and kiwi are of similar status among other fruits, she noted.

Shirdasti believed that 5 to 8 figs which have been soaked and taken before breakfast; as well as kiwi which is taken before sleep can greatly help with constipation.

She added "Also, oils, such as olive oil and grapes seed oil can reduce constipation and ease bowels movement.”

"The constipated would better eat bran bread or at least include one spoonful of wheat or rice bran in their diet. On the other hand, potato, rice, pastries, and soda will worsen constipation.”
