US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Wednesday reacted to reports of Abu Dhabi's decision to suspend the purchase of F-35 fighter jets, saying the United States was ready to sell the fighters, as well as drones, to the United Arab Emirates.
A UAE official told Reuters on Tuesday that his country had informed the United States that it would suspend talks on acquiring F-35 fighter jets as part of a $ 23 billion contract that includes drones, according to Reuters.
The official cited "technical requirements, effective operating constraints and cost / benefit analysis" as reasons for the UAE government's reassessment of the deal.
Informed sources told Reuters in January that the UAE had signed a contract to purchase 50 F-35 fighter jets and a maximum of 18 armed UAVs.
Blinken told a news conference in Kuala Lumpur that Washington should conduct an investigation.
He stated in this regard:
We have sought to ensure that, for example, our commitment to Israel's qualitative military superiority is guaranteed, so we have sought to ensure that we can have a comprehensive review of any technology sold or transferred to other partners in the region.
The US Secretary of State added:
But I think if the UAE is looking for both, we are still ready to move forward.
