Monday, 13 December 2021 (YJC)_ According to the United Nations Children's Fund, 9.9 million children across the country will be vaccinated against polio in the new round of the nationwide polio vaccination program.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has announced that the fourth round of the four-day polio vaccine project has begun in Afghanistan today.
According to UNICEF, 9.9 million children across Afghanistan are expected to receive the polio vaccine during this period. According to UNICEF, the project will start a week later in several southeastern provinces and several western and northern provinces.
This is the second round of the polio vaccination plan, which also covers areas that were not previously available. In the first round of such initiatives in November, 8.5 million children received the polio vaccine. Among them, 4.2 million children received the vaccine for the first time in three years.
Deeping Lu, head of the World Health Organization in Afghanistan, said:
We are stepping up our efforts to reach more children across Afghanistan. But we need to have long-term access to areas, especially where we have not been able to go in recent years, to get rid of the polio virus as soon as possible.
UNICEF added that in 2021, only four cases of polio were reported in Afghanistan. Therefore, this year the least cases of this disease have been discovered in Afghanistan and this is the best opportunity to eradicate polio in Afghanistan.
