The President of the Republic of Turkey said at the opening ceremony of the 16th Conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul:
We share our common desire for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan. We have no right to turn our backs on the Afghan people.
According to the Anatolian News Agency, since the re-emergence of the Taliban, Turkey and Turkish aid groups have provided assistance to the Afghan people, and Turkish officials have warned of a deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said:
In particular, the continuation of humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan is a priority in these difficult times. For our part, we support Afghanistan and the Afghan brothers who have historical ties.
The President of Turkey, noting that there are undesirable shortcomings in the political process in terms of government inclusion, clarified that criticisms and suggestions are explicitly conveyed to the audience through the relevant institutions.
"Turkey will continue its efforts to prevent further unrest and conflict in Afghanistan," Erdogan said.
We are taking these measures for the peace and stability of Afghanistan and the drawers of the region. The Islamic world, in addition to sending humanitarian aid, must also actively cooperate in this matter.
Noting that the developments in Afghanistan will create a new wave of migration, he stated:
Turkey, which hosts more than 5 million refugees, including 3.6 million Syrian refugees, will not tolerate the new wave of refugees.
Speaking about Islamophobia and hatred, Erdogan called on members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union of OIC member states to take "more decisive" steps.
He said:
As an organization, we must take more decisive steps in the fight against Islamophobia and hate speech.
