Friday, 10 December 2021 (YJC)_ A truck carrying migrants overturned in southern Mexico, killing at least 53 people and injuring dozens more.
In one of the deadliest incidents for immigrants risking their lives to reach the United States, at least 53 people, mostly from Central America, were killed when a truck carrying them overturned in southern Mexico.
According to officials, the accident happened when the truck carrying migrants overturned on a sharp bend outside the town of Toxella Gutierrez in the state of Chiapas and hit a bridge. The prosecutor's office put the total number of dead at 53.
Dozens more were injured in the crash and taken to hospitals in Chiapas, which borders Guatemala, according to Reuters. More than 100 people were inside the truck, officials said.
Men, women and children were among those killed, according to Chiapas state officials. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called the incident "very painful" and expressed regret.
