During a meeting with the leader of the Greek Orthodox Church, Pope Francis apologized for the actions and role of Catholics in creating discord and separation from the Orthodox.
According to the CNA, the pope added:
I acknowledge this; Actions that had little to do with Christ and the gospel, but more with a thirst for power and politics, severely weakened our relationship.
Pope Francis added:
In doing so, we allowed divisions to jeopardize our productivity. History feels the weight of these (actions), and today I must apologize to God, our brothers and sisters, for these mistakes of the Catholics.
On Saturday, Pope Francis was protested by a priest as he arrived in Greece.
According to media reports, the orthodox priest shouted at Pope Francis as he visited a site belonging to the Greek Orthodox Church in Athens:
Pop, you are an apostate!
Security forces immediately arrested him and evacuated him, but his protest is said to have been so loud that it was heard by the pope.
