Takht Ravanchi: Zionist Nuke Program Poses Real Threat to Middle EastIn his statement addressed to the second session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of nuclear weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Majid Takht Ravanchi referred to the Zionist regime's nuclear program and called it a real threat to the Middle East region.

“Israel has not choice but to join the NPT without any precondition and place all of its nuclear facilities and activities under the comprehensive safeguards of the IAEA," Takht Ravanchi said.

“Iran has a high record of accession, among the Middle Eastern countries, to the international instruments banning weapons of mass destruction,” he said while noting that “Iran is also a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Biological Weapons Convention, the Chemical Weapons Convention and the 1925 Geneva Protocol as well as a signatory to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, with a comprehensive safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”

He went on to refer to the remark that frequently noted by the Iranian Supreme Leader and said “Our leader has said several times that besides nuclear weapons, other types of weapons of mass destruction also pose a serious threat to humanity, that includes chemical and biological weapons.”

“Iranian nation is a victim of chemical weapons and that’s why we feel more than any other nation the danger caused by the production and stockpiling of such weapons,” he continued while noting Iran considers the use of such weapons as haram (religiously forbidden).

Weapons of mass destruction have already been proliferated and utilized in the Middle East, these weapons unquestionably pose an existential threat to both global peace and security, the recent history of the region shows it clearly.”

Elsewhere in his remark, Iranian ambassador called on all NPT members, to extend their cooperation and to exert their utmost efforts to ensure the early establishment by regional parties of the Middle East zone.

Takht Ravanchi also mentioned that the participation in the Conference of all 23 members of the region was important but the Zionist regime claimed the region is not ready to discuss the issue and decided not to attend the conference and instead opted for denouncing it.

Iranian official noted “Israel must join all related international legally binding instruments; it must join the NPT without any precondition while placing all of its nuclear facilities and activities under the comprehensive safeguards of the IAEA.
