United Nations: More than 70% of Somalis live below the poverty line

Saturday, 20 November 2021 (YJC)_ A spokesman for the UN secretary-general said Somalia was at the forefront of climate change, with more than 70 percent of Somalis living below the poverty line.

The UN official said that nearly 2.3 million people, or 18 percent of the country's population, are severely affected by severe water, food and pasture shortages and are at risk of contracting water-borne diseases due to lack of Access to safe drinking water is increasing.

The number of people in need of assistance and protection in Somalia is projected to increase by 30 percent by 2022, from 5.9 million to 7.7 million today.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 2.3 million Somalis are currently struggling with severe water and food shortages, and this is likely to be the fourth consecutive season of low rainfall that exacerbates the situation. Rapid drought in Somalia has raised concerns.

According to the United Nations, approximately 2.3 million people in 57 of the country's 74 regions face severe water, food and pasture shortages as water supplies and wells dry up.
