US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will leave for the region on Thursday.
According to the US Department of Defense, Austin will travel to the UAE and Bahrain to discuss strengthening defense cooperation and Iran's activities in the region.

The US Secretary of Defense's visit to the region comes at a time when talks on lifting sanctions against Iran with the P4+1 group are set to begin in Vienna, Austria, in the coming days.
Iran emphasizes that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
