The Pentagon said Monday that an Iranian naval helicopter approached a US Navy warship in the Oman Sea and circled three times.
"The Iranian helicopter landed 25 yards (about 23 meters) from the Essex warship," said John Kerby, a Pentagon spokesman, according to Reuters.
He added:
This is dangerous because it can lead to miscalculations.
The American news website Axius also reported that Kirby said in a briefing that the Iranian helicopter flew 25 yards from the USS Essex in the Persian Gulf. Kirby added that at one point it approached the ocean surface up to 10 feet (three meters) away.
He further claimed:
The Essex crew took the appropriate protective measures they felt were necessary and, of course, complied with international law. In the end, it had no effect on the movement of Essex or its operation. But this does not mean that this was not an unsafe and unprofessional act.
On Saturday, Iranian and foreign media published videos of the helicopter of the Islamic Republic of Iran flying over the American ship USS Essex during the Zulfiqar exercise in the Oman Sea.
