Tuesday, 16 November 2021 (YJC)_ A Pentagon spokesman reiterated his concern about the increase in Russian troops in the region, reiterating claims of Russian military activity on the Ukrainian border.
The Pentagon claimed Monday evening that it was still witnessing "abnormal military activity" and the accumulation of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told a news conference that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin would meet with his Ukrainian counterpart on Thursday.
According to Reuters, Kirby, however, declined to speculate on the purpose of the Russian military operation and did not provide further details.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinsky claimed yesterday that about 100,000 Russian troops were near the Ukrainian border, and that Western countries had shared information with Kiev about the active movements of Russian forces.
Zelensky said:
I hope that the whole world will now see clearly who really wants peace and who has concentrated nearly one hundred thousand soldiers on our border.
Eleven days ago, Ukraine's Defense Ministry put the number of Russian troops near the border at 90,000.
