Tuesday, 16 November 2021 (YJC)_ The US State Department, as well as the British Ministry of Defense, criticized Russia's test of anti-satellite weapons as dangerous and irresponsible.
Russia's test of anti-satellite weapons was met with a sharp response from the United States and Britain on Monday.
The State Department says Russia's test of anti-satellite weapons against one of its targets, garbage, has created a space that poses a threat to astronauts on the International Space Station and other extraterrestrial activities.
According to Reuters, experts say that weapons that explode satellites are a space hazard because they create a chain reaction of projectiles moving from orbit to Earth by creating clouds of parts that can collide with other objects.
State Department spokesman Ned Price told a news conference:
Russia's dangerous and irresponsible behavior jeopardizes the long-term stability of outer space and clearly shows that Russia's claims to oppose the space's armaments are dishonest and hypocritical.
Price added:
The Russian rocket produced more than 1,500 pieces of space debris in Earth orbit.
At the same time, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the most urgent concerns were about space debris, but that the experiment showed the need to normalize space.
On the other hand, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said that Russia's test of anti-satellite missiles shows Moscow's disregard for security, safety and space stability.
Wallace wrote on the Twitter page of the British Ministry of Defense:
This destructive anti-satellite missile test by Russia shows their complete disregard for space security, safety and stability.
Earlier, the US space command announced that Russia had shot down a satellite in its space orbit with an anti-satellite missile.
