Tuesday, 16 November 2021 (YJC)_ The presidents of the United States and China met by videoconference and said they intended to talk about increasing bilateral cooperation.
US President Joe Biden met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in a video conference on Tuesday morning.
Biden told the meeting that he hoped to have a frank dialogue on human rights and security issues as the meeting began to reduce tensions between the two countries.
According to Reuters, while the two men were engaged in their most extensive talks since Biden's presidency in January, Biden said:
Maybe I should start more formally, even though you and I have never been so formal with each other.
Calling Biden an "old friend," the Chinese president said he was "very pleased to see him" and that the two sides should increase communication and cooperation to address many of the challenges they face.
Biden added that the two leaders must ensure that their relationship does not turn into a public conflict, and promised to address issues of concern to Washington, including human rights and other issues in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to Reuters, Xi also told Biden that the two countries face many challenges and should increase communication and cooperation.
