According to Mawazin News, Saleh said in a tweet: "Peaceful demonstration is a right guaranteed in the constitution and should not deviate from its peaceful legal framework. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are unfortunate and unacceptable." The plan should be followed up and ensured to be repeated.
The Iraqi president stressed that maintaining public security is a national duty and that everyone should exercise restraint and put national interests before everything else.
Protests today in the wake of the Iraqi election escalated into violence as security forces attacked protesters, killing one person and injuring 125, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Health.
Parties and groups close to the protesters condemned the attack on the protesters and demanded that the perpetrators be punished.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi also met with security commanders on Friday evening to review the latest developments in Baghdad.
