State Department spokesman Ned Price told a daily news conference that the Biden administration's return to the JCPOA is a top priority, but intends to use the return as a platform to discuss other issues with Iran.
Price said:
We still believe that a bilateral return to the JCPOA is the most effective way to curb Iran's nuclear program ... So, this is our first step.
He added:
If we can achieve this mutual commitment, we will later use it as a basis for not only prolonging and strengthening the agreement, but also for negotiating other issues of concern.
So far, six rounds of talks have been held in Vienna between the United States and other parties to the JCPOA other than Iran to facilitate the return of the United States to the JCPOA. The parties say tangible progress has been made in the talks, but some differences remain.
