In an exclusive article on Wednesday evening, Reuters reported that Riyadh had asked Washington for help in the war with Yemen.
Reuters quoted three informed sources as saying:
Saudi Arabia, under intense US pressure to end the siege of Yemeni ports, has asked Washington to help strengthen its defenses.
Informed sources told the news agency that Riyadh has called for the purchase of American weapons to help Saudi Arabia strengthen its defense systems after Yemeni forces attacked its territory with military drones and ballistic missiles.
A senior US government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained:
Publicly and privately, we pay a lot of attention to the issue of [Yemeni] ports and airports. This is what Saudi Arabia must do.
"Defending Saudi Arabia is an important commitment of Washington," he said.
There is talk between the United States and Saudi Arabia about the best way to fulfill President Joe Biden's commitment to defend the country without providing offensive weapons to the Yemeni conflict.
