Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, while emphasizing that the occupying and uninvited foreign forces must leave the country without any preconditions or further delays, said: The Security Council must compel the Israeli regime to end its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights and to immediately end its aggression against Syria.
Majid Takht Ravanchi, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations in New York, addressed a meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday, November 26, to review developments in the Middle East and delivered a speech.
He first thanked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for his efforts in holding the sixth meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee and welcomed the first face-to-face meeting of the committee's co-chairs.
This, along with the committee members' deliberations on some elements of the constitution, is a remarkable and encouraging development.
Takhtarvanchi added:
As emphasized at the recent meeting of Astana's representatives with Paderson in Geneva, we will continue to encourage the Committee's co-chairs to engage constructively and cooperate in a spirit of flexibility and compromise.
The Iranian representative reiterated that the committee should continue its work without any external interference and pressure, adding:
Setting any fictitious deadlines for the termination of the committee or any other such condition will adversely affect the committee's work and should therefore be avoided. Finally, it must be ensured that this is a truly Syrian-led political process, owned by Syria and facilitated by the United Nations.
Takhtrovanchi reminded:
Of course, serious efforts must be made in other areas to complete the work of the committee. First, the occupation of parts of Syria by foreign forces must end. Accordingly, all occupying and uninvited foreign forces must leave the country without any preconditions or further delays.
He added:
In this regard, the Security Council must act responsibly and force the Israeli regime to end the occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights and to immediately stop its aggression against Syria.
The senior Iranian diplomat called the Israeli regime's aggression and destabilizing actions a clear violation of international law, which also threatens regional and international peace and security.
Takhtravanchi continued:
The assassination of Medhat Saleh, a Syrian citizen, on October 16, 2021, inside Syria by Israeli snipers from the occupied Golan Heights is one of Israel's latest adventurous actions. We condemn this criminal act, as well as all the violations of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria by the Israeli regime, and emphasize the inherent right of Syria to defend itself at the appropriate time and place of its choice.
He added:
We also condemn the October 20 terrorist attack in Damascus that killed 14 people and injured several others. Such terrorist acts reaffirm that the fight against all terrorist groups must continue unabated. We also reject separatist activities or illegitimate initiatives of self-government in Syria and condemn any attempt to support them.
