Wednesday, 20 October 2021 (YJC)_ The US Secretary of Defense claimed on Tuesday that Russia is an obstacle to peace in Ukraine.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Tuesday called for an end to the protracted war in eastern Ukraine.
Speaking to his Ukrainian counterpart, he said:
We call on Russia to end its occupation of the Crimean peninsula, to prevent a prolongation of the war in eastern Ukraine, and to suspend its destabilizing activities in the Black Sea.
The US Secretary of Defense added:
Russia has started this war and it is an obstacle to a peaceful solution in Ukraine.
As tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalated in 2014, fierce clashes broke out between the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian groups in eastern Ukraine known as the Donbass, and the clashes continue.
Also in the same year, a referendum was held on the Crimean peninsula to annex the region to the Russian Federation, which joined Moscow.
Ukraine, the United States and the European Union have repeatedly accused Russia of involvement in the Donbas conflict, saying they do not recognize Crimea's annexation by Russia and calling for an end to Russia's "occupation" of Ukraine.
