Monday, 18 October 2021 (YJC)_ Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces announced the country is eager to expand military cooperation with Russia.

Gen. Bagheri: Iran is Determined to Expand Military Cooperation with RussiaDuring his remarks upon his arrival in Moscow on Monday, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri announced the country is determined to expand military cooperation with Russia.

He referred to the administration of President Seyed Ebrahim Raesi's 'Look to the East' policy and said “The East and the Eastern countries are of high importance for the new administration and that’s the reason why Iran and Russia will strengthen military cooperation.”

He went on to add that “After the termination of a decade-long UN arms embargo on Tehran, Iran has signed agreements with Russia on arms purchases. During the recent years bilateral cooperation with Russia has been improved and we already have cooperation with Russia’s Armed Forces.”

Currently and at the official invitation of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, General Baqeri, heading a high-ranking military delegation, travelled to Moscow.

The expansion of defense and military cooperation, fight against terrorism and leading regional and international developments are among issues which would be discussed during the current visit.

After it failed to renew the Iranian arms embargo through a resolution at the United Nations Security Council, former US president, Donald Trump's administration suffered an embarrassing loss.

On October 18, 2020, the embargo was lifted under Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
