Friday, 8 October 2021 (YJC)_ The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to two Filipino-American and Russian pro-Western journalists.
The winners of the Nobel Peace Prize were announced on Friday by its headquarters in Norway.
The award went to Maria Ressa, a Filipino-American investigative journalist, and Dmitry Muratov, a Russian journalist, for their "efforts to protect freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace," according to the Xinhua website.
The Nobel Prizes are awarded each year by the Swedish Institute for Science and Technology. However, the responsibility for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize lies with the organization's headquarters in Oslo.
The Nobel Peace Prize is typically awarded with a political orientation and in support of pro-Western figures.
Muratov is one of the founders of the critical Russian newspaper Novaja Gazeta and, according to the Nobel Institute, has been able to operate under "challenging conditions" for many years.
