In an interview with Fox News, US defense officials claimed that Salem Abu Ahmed, a senior al-Qaeda member, had been killed in a US drone strike in Syria about 10 days ago.
Pentagon officials say Salem Abu Ahmed was killed in a September 20 drone strike near Idlib, Syria. He has been responsible for planning al-Qaeda's extra-regional operations.
Pentagon officials say there is no evidence that civilians were killed in the attack.
In the evening of September 20, US media reported that the United States had targeted a vehicle belonging to the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group Haras al-Din in a drone strike in Syria, which was carrying three senior members of the group.
US claims about "countering terrorists in Syria" have been seriously questioned. The Syrian government considers the US presence in the country an occupation and has repeatedly called on the United Nations and the Security Council to confront it.
