Democratic leaders in the US House of Representatives delayed a planned vote on a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill that was scheduled for Thursday, bowing to party progressives who previously held a large social Action was sought on the policy bill.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Joe Biden are scrambling to iron out differences between progressive lawmakers, who want a $3.5 trillion social spending package to go with the infrastructure plan, and a smaller bill. Huh.
The move gave Biden and Democratic leaders more time to try to gather votes to garner support for an important part of his agenda.
“There has been a lot of progress this week and we are closer to an agreement than ever before,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. “But we are not there yet, and therefore, we will need some extra time to finish the work, starting early tomorrow morning.”
