Tuesday, 28 September 2021 (YJC)_Iranian agriculture ministry is planning to purchase some 400,000 metric tons of low-quality apples from growers this harvest season, according to a ministry official who says the scheme is meant to support farmers and juice manufacturers in the country.
Head of Iran’s Central Organization for Rural Cooperatives (CORC) said on Monday that his department was committed to buy grade 3 apple from farmers in two main apple growing provinces of West and East Azerbaijan.
“The operation to buy grade 3 apple from orchid owners in west of the country will kick-start tomorrow September 28,” said Esmaeil Ghaderi Far.
Ghaderi Far said that the CORC had already started preparing storage houses and transportation facilities for the purchase scheme to go ahead as planned.
The official said apple harvest purchased through the scheme will be supplied to juice manufacturers inside Iran as well as to customers in Russia and Turkey.
This is almost a first time the Iranian government offers guaranteed purchase for a crop like apple.
The country had a surplus of about two million tons of apple last harvest season. That prompted authorities to launch a scheme that conditioned imports of banana into Iran on exports of apple.
Ghaderi Far said that the government is also planning to offer financial support to people investing in the juice concentrate sector in order to increase demand for crops like apple.
He said the support would cover various crops grown in main farming hubs in Iran, including orange farming in the northern province of Mazandaran.
