US President Joe Biden met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday night, local time.
According to the Financial Express, Biden claimed during the meeting that the United States believes in the United Nations and its values. He stressed that strong ties between Washington and the international community are crucial given the current international challenges, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the climate change crisis.
According to the report, Biden and Guterres met in New York on the eve of the start of the annual UN General Assembly. The US president is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Tuesday.
Biden told Guterres during the meeting:
A strong partnership between the United Nations and the United States is based on the common values and principles of the two sides. And at this moment, these principles and foundations are more important than ever.
The UN Secretary-General also stressed the need for US commitment to the United Nations and multilateralism in the international system.
