The US government on Thursday imposed sanctions on five people for allegedly sponsoring the al-Qaeda terrorist group.
According to Reuters, Andrea Gaki, director of the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, claimed that the targeted sanctions underscore the United States' unwavering commitment to block al-Qaeda funding.
The US official added:
We will continue to work with foreign partners, including Turkey, to expose and disrupt al-Qaeda funding networks.
The sanctions list includes an Egyptian lawyer based in Turkey who, according to the US Treasury Department, has facilitated a range of al-Qaeda activities in Turkey. The list also includes an Egyptian financial intermediary and three Turkish citizens.
Last month, the US Treasury Department announced in a statement that it had placed two entities and three individuals on the sanctions list for being al-Qaeda's financial facilitators in Syria and Turkey.
