Monday, 6 September 2021 (YJC)_ Noting that the European Union does not accept the Taliban government in Afghanistan at the moment, the Austrian foreign minister said it was clear that the Taliban has gained confidence.
While a Taliban spokesman announced that the date for announcing the composition of the new government in Afghanistan was approaching, the European Union was not yet ready to accept the group as the Kabul government.
Speaking at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers today (Monday), Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said that European countries' expectations of the Taliban in Afghanistan depended on their respect for the rights of local residents.
According to Sputnik, Schallenberg claimed:
We have to admit that the new situation in Afghanistan could bring the whole region into a whirlpool. The European Union expects the Taliban to respect the rights of the Afghan people to freedom of movement.
"There is a clear increase in self-confidence among the Taliban," he said.
It is inappropriate to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate representatives of the Afghan people at this time.
According to the report, the Austrian Foreign Minister stated that the European Union does not currently recognize the Taliban as the official government of Afghanistan, adding:
We have to wait and see if this regime can meet Europe's expectations.
