The US Embassy in Afghanistan issued an urgent statement Thursday morning warning its nationals of approaching Kabul International Airport.
The statement, posted on the US Embassy in Afghanistan website, said: "All Americans should leave the Kabul airport and its entrances as soon as they receive this warning."
The Washington embassy in Kabul warned:
Due to security threats outside the entrances of Kabul Airport, we advise American citizens to refrain from attending the airport and to refrain from entering the airport if they do not receive personal instructions from a US government representative at this time.
The State Department says more than 4,000 Americans have been evacuated from Kabul airport since Aug. 14, saying the number of Americans seeking help to leave Afghanistan is less than 1,000.
