Reacting to remarks by fugitive Afghan President Ashraf Ghani about his possible return to the country, US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman stated that Washington no longer recognizes him as President of Afghanistan.
Three days after fleeing Afghanistan on Wednesday, August 17, Ghani released a video message announcing that he was in the UAE, saying he wanted to return to Afghanistan to "fight for the rights and values of the people."
The former Afghan president also claimed in the video that he had no intention of fleeing the country and that his guards had prevented him from being killed as he left Afghanistan.
A former Afghan Foreign Ministry official, meanwhile, denied Ghani's allegations that he had asked for his political passport from the foreign ministry a few days before fleeing and that he was deliberately leaving the country.
