Members of the US Congress, including Democrats who are also Biden allies, expressed strong dissatisfaction with developments in Afghanistan this morning (Wednesday) and said they were investigating the causes of the crisis.

"Recent events are a combination of the mistakes made by Republican and Democratic governments over the past 20 years," Sen. Bob Menendez, Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement, according to Reuters. "We are now witnessing the dire consequences of many years of intelligence and political failure."

Menendez announced that his committee would hold a meeting on US policy on Afghanistan, during which discussions would take place between Biden administration officials and former US administration officials led by Donald Trump on how to implement the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Republicans in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee also wrote a letter to him asking him to summon Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to find out why the State Department was not prepared for the events and crisis following the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

According to Reuters, the timing of the hearing of officials from the Biden administration and the Trump administration has not yet been determined.
