Sunday, 15 August 2021 (YJC)_The Sunday Times quoted unnamed sources as saying that Britain would withdraw its ambassador from Afghanistan and end its diplomatic presence in the country.
"The embassy is being evacuated because London fears the Taliban will take over Kabul in the next few days. We will not maintain our presence. There is no confidence that the Taliban will respect any guarantee", the source told the Sunday Times
According to the Sunday Times, Sir Laurie Bristow, the British ambassador, will leave Afghanistan by Monday evening.
The newspaper stressed that initially the British Foreign Office wanted to keep some of its officials, including Bristow, at Kabul airport, but the plans were revised due to threats by the Taliban to seize the airport.
Afghanistan is witnessing an escalation of violence as Taliban attacks escalate following the gradual withdrawal of international troops from the country, which was due to end on September 11. The withdrawal was signed in an agreement between the Taliban and the United States in Doha in February 2020.
