Afghanistan's Permanent Representative to the UN calls on the Pentagon to provide immediate air support to Afghan forcesAfghanistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations called on the Pentagon to maintain its position to provide immediate air support to Afghan forces, stressing that its men and women are ready to defend Afghanistan against the Taliban until the last minute.

"This is always the case because you did it after 9/11," said Adele Raz, referring to recent remarks by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby that it is not always possible for the United States to provide air support to Afghan forces.

She warned that current US air support for Afghan forces was severely limited and called on Biden to increase assistance to Afghan forces as US and NATO forces withdraw from Afghanistan. The rapid withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan has had consequences.

"We are fighting to defend ourselves and world peace and security," the Afghan ambassador to the United States said, referring to criticism from US officials, including Biden, about the poor readiness of Afghan security forces to confront the Taliban to date. We are defending the country until the last moment. I urge the United States and its allies to impose sanctions on more Taliban leaders, including travel bans.

The Afghan diplomat also referred to recent US intelligence reports that Kabul would fall within six to 12 months of NATO and US withdrawal, saying: "If I talk about the fall of Kabul, I am talking about the loss of hope".
