Wednesday, 11 August 2021 (YJC)_ A Chinese court has sentenced a Canadian spy to 11 years in prison for operating under the guise of a businessman.
Diplomatic tensions between Canada and Beijing over the mutual detention of each other's citizens have entered a new phase with a Chinese court ruling.
According to Reuters, an appeals court in Dandong today (Wednesday) convicted Michael Spawer, a Canadian businessman spying in China, and sentenced him to 11 years in prison.
The court announced the code, which confiscated 50,000 yuan of Spawer's personal property and he would be deported from China after serving his sentence.
Spawer, who was arrested in China in December 2018, was charged with espionage by a Dandong court in June 2019, according to the report. The court then continued its investigation until it announced its final verdict today.
