Tuesday, 10 August 2021 (YJC)_The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry highlighted the futility of the US policy of maximum pressure on Iran, reminding the White House officials that using the approach of the former US president will not produce any result other than the same failures of recent years.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Saeed Khatibzadeh said the US administration must realize that it won’t achieve anything different from the past year’s development with Donald Trump’s mentality.
The US needs to change its mentality and consider the realities on the ground, he said, adding, “They (Americans) know and we know as well that the (US) policy of maximum pressure has failed, and Iran would not accept anything less than the JCPOA.”
Asked about the resumption of Vienna talks on the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Khatibzadeh said Iran has never bowed out of the negotiations.
He explained that Iran is experiencing a democratic transition of power with the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi taking office, noting that the executive teams involved in the JCPOA talks would change in this process.
President Raisi has made it clear that the sanctions on Iran must be lifted, the spokesman said, adding that the termination should take place within the framework of the Iranian people’s interests and in accordance with the instructions.
Khatibzadeh finally reiterated that Iran will cease taking its remedial measures as soon as a solution is achieved for the return of the US to its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal.
Trump left the nuclear deal in 2018 and initiated a “maximum pressure” policy against Iran, prompting Tehran to take remedial measures by gradually reducing its nuclear commitments under the deal.
Since April, representatives from Iran and the P4+1 group of countries – France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China – have been holding talks in Vienna aimed at revitalizing the JCPOA and bringing the US back to compliance.
