Tuesday, 8 June 2021 (YJC) _After Italian military plane is refused use of air space, Italy's foreign minister summoned UAE ambassador.
On the instructions of Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio, foreign ministry Secretary General Ettore Sequi on Tuesday summoned UAE ambassador Omar al-Shamsi.
According to a statement issued, the secretary general expressed surprise and keen disappointment for an unexpected gesture that the ministry does not understand in relation to the UAE's refusal of the use of its air space for an Italian Air Force Boeing 767 carrying about 40 Italian journalists headed for Herat, where Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini was due to meet with the national contingent in the process of withdrawing from Afghanistan.
After having been refused permission to use the UAE air space, the Boeing landed in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and then left a few hours later for Herat using a route further north.
In the initial flight plans it seems the use of UAE air space had been authorised.
Diplomatic relations with the UAE became tense after the Italian government's decision on an arms embargo for that country due to its bombing of Yemen.
