Sunday, 02 May 2021_Another Joint Commission meeting among the remaining signatories of the Iran nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the JCPOA comes to an end in Vienna.

Vienna talks: Slow progress despite some agreementsIranian lead delegate Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says an agreement has been reached to remove the majority of individuals and entities on the US sanctions list and that negotiations are continuing on the rest of the names on the list.

Araghchi had mentioned earlier that the US has also agreed to lift sanctions on Iran’s energy, finance, insurance, automotive and shipping sectors. But Iran is demanding the removal of all US sanctions imposed after the US withdrawal from the deal in 2018, including those imposed under other labels by the Trump administration.

Iran has also steadfastly opposed a step-by-step process, saying it will only go back to full compliance after all US sanctions are lifted and the Islamic Republic verifies their effective removal. Araghchi said delegates are now involved in the time-consuming process of drafting an agreement.

EU Coordinator Enrique Mora said there were moderate advances, adding that with more detail comes more complexity. While the US delegation led by Robert Malley has been engaged in negotiations in Vienna, there has been no direct talks between Iran and the US.

Delegates have decided to have further consultations in their respective capitals before returning for another Joint Commission meeting at the end of next week.
