Unionized government employees are continuing a protest in and around D-Chowk in Islamabad as of early Feb. 11. The purpose of the demonstration, which began Feb. 10, is to demand increased salaries. Protesters attempted to march to Parliament House but were stopped by a heavy police deployment. Police fired teargas in an attempt to break up the gathering. Participants reportedly plan to continue the action until their demands are met.
Security personnel almost certainly remain deployed near the protest venues and other sensitive locations in Islamabad. Police will probably also establish roadblocks along Constitution Avenue for the duration of the protest. Further clashes between police and activists are possible. Demonstrators may attempt to shift their protest to other venues in Islamabad in the coming hours and days.
