The government of Prime Minister Imran Khan has come under fire after International Corruption Perceptions Index slipped Pakistan by four points.

PM Imran Khan under fire after Pakistan slips by 4 points on corruption indexIt has come as an embarrassment for a government which came into power in 2018 with a key promise to bring an end to the rampant corruption in Pakistan. Prime Minister Imran Khan argued that the data given in the Transparency International report belonged to the period when the Opposition parties were in the power, something denied by the Opposition.

The Transparency International's perception index ranked Pakistan at 124th position out of 180 countries. Most of the MPs, Ministers and advisors of the current government joined the ruling party not long before general elections in 2018. And many among them were tainted with corruption charges.

The public perception in Pakistan is that Prime Minister Imran himself is not financially corrupt unlike many of his predecessors. However, media reports indicates that many of his close associates were allegedly involved in the wheeling dealings in a country where anti-graft watchdog least punish allegedly corrupt government officials, ministers and powerful retired military generals.
