Key figures in the EU have been heaping praise and best wishes on the new US President, Joe Biden. During a virtual summit on Thursday the bloc's 27 heads of government agreed to re-calibrate multilateral cooperation with Washington. Earlier, in the European Parliament, Biden's predecessor was discussed.
Many holding senior positions in the European Union are suddenly willing to talk tough against Donald Trump now that he has no power. Is this what diplomacy looks like? Is this what cowardice looks like? No doubt citizens are drawing their own conclusions.
EU leaders have agreed their four priorities with Biden are to work on dealing with COVID-19, climate change, fair trade and also security. Many argue the Trump era highlighted the extent to which the EU is under America's thumb.
Now that Biden is in the White House there is fresh optimism that the Iran nuclear deal, which Trump did all in his power to destroy, might now be saved. Apparently, there is much to be gained.
EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, is due to chair a meeting of the bloc's foreign ministers this coming Monday. The future of the nuclear deal will be discussed.
