Monday, 09 November 2020 (YJC)_ The European Union will soon sign a contract for millions of doses of newly launched COVID-19 vaccine.
The European Union will soon sign a contract for millions of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine being developed by Pfizer PFE.N and BioNTech BNTX.O, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday.
The remark was made hours after the two companies said their experimental vaccine was more than 90% effective, in what could be a major victory in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The European Commission, which is negotiating with vaccine makers on behalf of EU states, had said in September it had concluded exploratory talks with U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech over the supply of 200 million doses of their potential COVID-19 shot, with an option to buy another 100 million.
“EU Commission to sign contract with them soon for up to 300 million doses,” von der Leyen wrote on Twitter.
