Monday, 19 October 2020_The 2007 UN Security Council arms embargo on Iran has expired, as the international community - minus the United States- moves forward in honoring the JCPOA pact on Iran’s nuclear energy program.

Lifting of arms embargo shows global acceptance of IranThe United States and Israel lobbied desperately to maintain the embargo, but received almost no international support.

Many believe that the US and Israel are so desperate to stop the arms embargo because they do not want Iranians to have the ability to defend themselves. Tel Aviv and Washington have openly promoted waging war on Iran for decades.

The end of the arms embargo is more about principle: no one expects an Iranian shopping spree. Iran is already self-reliant militarily, producing 90% of its defense needs domestically. Tehran immediately reminded that the unconventional arms and weapons of mass destruction Western arms makers excel in have no place in Iran’s defense doctrine.

After illegally and unilaterally withdrawing from the JCPOA, Washington orchestrated an even stricter raft of economic sanctions on Iran of almost unprecedented brutality and illegality.

The historic defeat of the arms embargo is being hailed as a victory for multilateralism, regional security, global peace and as a sign that the overwhelming majority of the international community is on the side of peace with Iran and its 1979 Iranian Islamic Revolution.
