Thursday, 17 September 2020_Healthcare workers in Peru protesting labor conditions were met with a water cannon and shoves from police officers even as they received praise for tending to the front lines of the country's battle with the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Protesters gathered in front of the country's constitutional court in Lima on Wednesday (September 16) to demand better working conditions and demand the government halt its challenge to a law governing the health care profession.
Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday praised healthcare workers for their 'heroic' and 'exhaustive' work.
Protests by healthcare workers have been common in Peru during the pandemic as professionals have called for better working conditions and demanded greater access to personal protective gear.
Peru has recorded nearly 740,000 cases of the coronavirus, the fifth highest case load in the world, and 30,927 deaths as of Tuesday (September 15). It has tracked amongst the world's deadliest in fatality rate per capita, with 94 deaths per 100,000 residents.
However, authorities say positive results from lockdown are starting to come through. Nationally, there was a 29% decrease in new coronavirus cases in comparison to the week before, officials reported this week.
