Wednesday, 16 September 2020_If elected president in November, Joe Biden would have all US sanctions on Iran stay in place, including the ones enacted under President Donald Trump. That’s what many Iranians believe. They say there will be no talks with either Trump or Biden until all unilateral sanctions imposed by the US on Iran are lifted.
They also say any future talks between the US and Iran should never cover other issues such as Iran's ongoing fight against terrorism in Iraq and Syria as well as regional affairs, including Iran’s defense doctrine.
It’s a sentiment also shared by Iranian university scholars. They say Biden’s recent rhetoric of “there is a smart way to be tough on Iran” serves as further proof that all US sanctions would remain in place. Moreover, Biden has reaffirmed his pledge that the US would not re-enter the 2015 nuclear deal until Tehran changes course.
The Iranian government has also said on several occasions that when it comes to relations between Iran and the US, there will be no positive development unless Washington abandons its unlawful sanctions and corrects the wrong path it has chosen. The government has also said the key to positive developments in relations is in Washington’s hands, and that it does not depend on the result of the November election in the US whatsoever.
