Monday, 07 September 2020_The myopic vision of the United States could ignite a catastrophic conflict in the Persian Gulf region that “has the potential to escalate into a global conflagration,” says Dennis Etler, an American political analyst who has a decades-long interest in international affairs.
Etler, a former professor of Anthropology at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Monday while commenting on a statement of China’s foreign minister.
In an implied rebuke of America’s unilateral policies, China’s foreign minister said on Saturday that Beijing and Paris should work to promote multilateralism and safeguard major international agreements, such as the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, in the face of unilateralism.
Wang Yi made the remarks in a meeting with his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian, in Paris, where he said the two sides “should strengthen coordination and cooperation on international affairs, and safeguard major outcomes of international agreements and multilateral diplomacy, such as the Iran nuclear deal.”
US President Donald Trump, a hawkish critic of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), unilaterally withdrew Washington from the agreement in May 2018, and unleashed the “toughest ever” sanctions against the Islamic Republic in defiance of global criticism.
Following its much-criticized exit, Washington has been attempting to prevent the remaining signatories from abiding by their commitments and thus kill the historic agreement, which is widely viewed as a fruit of international diplomacy.
Both China and France are among the remaining parties to the Iran deal.
Professor Etler said, “The myopic vision of the US only adds fuel to the fire that could consume the Persian Gulf region in a catastrophic conflict that has the potential to escalate into a global conflagration.”
“The US accuses Iran of aggressive intent but, in fact, it is the US and Israel that have fueled conflicts in the Middle East. If Israel respected the rights of the Palestinian people and the US stopped intervening in the affairs of Muslim majority nations in North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia there would be no reason for conflict with Iran,” he added.
“Iran is responding to pressure that the US has applied economically, politically, and militarily. All these actions are meant to destabilize Iran, reverse the verdict of history, and replace the Islamic Republic with a compliant client state,” he said.
