Wednesday, 15 July 2020_Attitudes to wearing face masks have changed around the world. From the US President to the British Prime Minister, many leaders around the world have started wearing masks in public for the first time in recent days. In a shift in his government's position on July 10, British PM Boris Johnson spoke of the need for a stricter approach in confined setting. And that approach is about to be enforced.

Britain makes masks mandatory in shopsWear a mask in shops or risk a fine of up to 100 pounds: The latest message from the British government to the public. Face masks have been compulsory on public transport in England since 15 June. The move brings England into line with Scotland and other major European nations like Spain, Italy and Germany.

The new measure comes only two days after Cabinet Office Minister, Michael Gove said it was best to rely on people’s common sense.

Confusion over some of the Johnson government’s measures over the past few months persists, and questions abound...such as why the new measure will not come into effect for another 11 days and why the same rule does not apply to pubs, cafes and restaurants.

The latest rule for shops will be enforced by the police, raising concerns about it straining the relationship between police officers and the general public. All this at a time when a report requested by the government's chief scientific adviser suggests the UK could see around 120,000 new coronavirus deaths in hospitals during a "reasonable" worst-case scenario this winter.

Not long after the British government lifted some of the lockdown restrictions, it’s already had to extend the lockdown in the East Midlands city of Leicester and now this. What kinds of restrictions it will introduce as the country approaches the flu season, is anyone’s guess.
