Tuesday, 30 June_The city facing an extension by a fortnight of the months-long lockdown is Leicester. It has recorded more than 650 new cases in the two weeks to June 16. This comes just over a week since Health Secretary Matt Hancock revealed what he called an 'outbreak' of COVID-19 in Leicester, home to more than 350,000 people of various ethnic groups, raising concerns echoed by the Prime Minister.

COVID-19 flare-up threatens to lock down British central cityMeantime in Leicester, reaction to the possible reimposition of restrictions has been mixed. The city’s mayor has called the report recommending his city stays in lockdown as unjustified and 'hastily cobbled together'.

Most of the criticism has come from the opposition Labor party, with the party’s leader saying the government has been asleep at the wheel, challenging its definition of local lockdowns and yet-to-be released test-and-trace app.

The UK death toll from confirmed cases COVID-19 is now approaching 44,000. Yet the British government has eased the restrictions starting July 4 to get the stagnant economy moving, leading many to ask whether it has a clear exit strategy.
