Tehran, 20 May_Barbershops, florists and local hardware stores are among the very few businesses that have been authorized to reopen across Spain since May 4, of course with some restrictions. They have been offering key services to Spaniards who are struggling to get back to life after two months under total lockdown, but how has business been like for them, and how have they been coping with the new reality?

Small Essential Businesses in Barcelona Struggle to SurviveAs Spain is slowly relaxing Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, businesses are gearing up to reopen their stores. In Barcelona, where a lockdown has been extended over public health concerns, the few stores that have reopened are practicing a new safety protocol which includes social distancing, hand sanitisers, masks and gloves.

The Spanish government has pledged a 200 Billion-euro package to fight the economic ripple effects of the coronavirus but some say the money was not forthcoming.

As there is growing talk about a new economic recession, the mood out on the streets of Barcelona remained wary.

In March, socialist prime minister Pedro Sanchez pleaded with the EU for a Marshall plan and called for massive public investments to stimulate the economy but the fiscally conservative German government shunned the idea, offering a more modest coronavirus recovery fund instead for the most affected like Spain and Italy.

The holiday season is just around the corner and no one really knows if tourists will flock back to Barcelona to spend their hard earned cash. Small businesses say that adds to the hurting but they find solace in their loyal domestic customers.
