Tehran 19 February _Iran’s Guardian Council, the election supervisory body, say the vetting process for the candidates of upcoming legislative elections was solely based on law and had nothing to do with the political factions the nominees belong to.

Guardian Council: Vetting process based on Iran law, not politicsTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club(YJC)-Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Wednesday, Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, the spokesman for the Guardian Council, was asked about claims that many hopefuls with the reformist camp had been disqualified from running in the 11th parliamentary polls scheduled for February 21.

He explained that disqualifications had nothing to do with political faction and the Guardian Council only did its best to enforce the law properly.

“The council has never had a political view,” the spokesman said. “It is only tasked with implementing the law approved by the parliament and closes its eyes to political factions while making a judgment.”

Kadkhodaei also noted that the Guardian Council does not consider elections “a joint-stock company,” in which political groups hold shares.

Asked by a French reporter about the possibility of an election turnout standing below 50 percent, he replied ironically that if such a figure is recorded, Iran will be the same as France.

“The average participation of people [in elections] has never been below 50 percent. In this round, we will witness the same level, God willing,” Kadkhodaei said.

Iranians will go to polls on Friday to elect lawmakers for a four-year-term at the 290-seat parliament.
