TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club(YJC)-Three officials briefed on the situation told the Washington Post on Monday the talks regarding potential sanctions are in preliminary stages.
One of the officials said that the plan is to wait "at least a little while" to see if the Iraqi government move forward with ousting American troops.
The officials said that the Treasury Department and the White House would coordinate the sanctions plan on Iraq.
Trump on Sunday vowed to impose sanctions on Iraq after the parliament voted to obligate Iraq's government "to work towards ending the presence of all foreign troops on Iraqi soil."
The Iraqi parliament’s move came following the US assassination of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), at Baghdad International Airport in Iraq.
