TEHRAN, Nov 5_A Tory party candidate in the forthcoming general election wrote highly inflammatory posts on social media deriding people on benefits.

Conservative party hopeful called for the culling of poor peopleTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club(YJC)_Francesca O’Brien, who was selected last month to contest the key marginal seat of Gower (south Wales), wrote derogatory comments about poor people appearing on the reality TV show Benefits Street.

In one highly inflammatory post she said that people appearing on the show needed “putting down”. In other words, O’Brien was apparently advocating the slaughter of poor people as a viable economic policy.

Reacting to the news, Shadow Education Secretary, Angela Rayne, called for O’Brien to be de-selected as a candidate.

“This is absolutely disgusting and reveals the cruelty at the heart of the Tories’ benefits cuts. Universal credit was deliberately designed to punish people who are out of work”, Rayne said.

This latest negative story is a blow to the Tories’ ongoing battle to counter the image of them being the so-called “nasty party”.

The campaign to counter the image was started by former Tory Prime Minister, David Cameron, who appeared intent on rooting out racist, sexist and deeply ingrained class-based attitudes in the Conservative party.

In a commentary for The Times on March 28, 2019, British author and former speech writer for Tony Blair, Philip Collins, argued that the Tories “could become the nasty party again”.
